Dr. Jolyon Troscianko

visual ecologist
United Kingdom

Jolyon Trosciano’s lab investigates how visual information affects the ecology, behaviour, survival and conservation of animals. Examples include the influence of artificial light on behaviour, the function of colour patterns for predator-prey interactions such as camouflage or motion confusion, or the interactions between light environment, habitat structure and survival. Our work spans an enormous range of species, from moths and birds, to crustaceans and reptiles, using methods from computational modelling and simulations to field experiments, elucidating the mechanisms and associated evolutionary drivers of visual signals, or contributing to evidence-based recommendations for preserving biodiversity. I also enjoy developing open-source methods for modelling animal vision or quantifying behaviour, and novel equipment for measuring visual information.

Steve Hildenbrandt

Retired U.S. Air Force Veteran and Amateur Astronomer
United States

A retired U.S. Air Force veteran and amateur astronomer, he rediscovered his lifelong fascination with the night sky after a thirty-year military and nine-year civilian career. What began as a simple enjoyment of visual astronomy through binoculars has grown into a pursuit of minimalist astrophotography and a deeper appreciation for the natural night.

A dedicated volunteer, he serves on the Board of the Miami Valley Astronomical Society (MVAS), sharing his passion through community outreach and public stargazing events. His interest in astronomy quickly expanded into an understanding that protecting the night sky benefits far more than stargazers—it safeguards insects, aquatic life, birds, amphibians, mammals, and human health. This realization led to his active involvement with Dark Sky Ohio, where he advocates for preserving the beauty and ecological importance of natural darkness.
